The Göta Canal can be analysed as a public utility which generates economic value according to various mechanisms. The canal essentially represents an environmental and tourist resource but with a significant cultural and historical dimension. In the field of the tourism economics, the development of various methods to estimate the value of such a facility is a long-term research project, directed by Jan Lindvall. This project "fiche" concerns the process of data collection for the four following studies.

The initial hypothesis is that people may be willing to pay for the mere existence of the canal, even if they do not sail on it or visit it. A representative sample of the Swedish population (approximately 5000 people) answered a questionnaire, and analysis of the replies will provide the basis for estimating this value.
A second study under the heading of cultural tourism, conducted by Johan Hedrén, focuses on how Göta Canal has been depicted in the press, brochures and posters. This will result in production of a well-illustrated report.

If sites near the canal are more attractive, this should be reflected in higher estates prices. The relationship between prices and distance to the canal for traded real estates have been analysed within the frame of a hedonistic price model.

Study of the "ownership structure" of the Göta Canal, directed by Professor Göran Skogh and Doctor Per-Olof Bjuggren, and entrusted to the lawyer/economist Henrik af Donner. The idea behind this initiative is that the "performance" of a canal as a monument to be preserved for future generations can be affected by the legal form of the structure vested with the rights of ownership. The Göta Canal is still managed by a Board of directors of which all the members are designated by the Ministry of Industry, under a regime adapted to the "transport" function of the canal, despite the fact that the canal has long been abandoned as a transport route. The advantages of greater direct involvement of the local communities are being examined. Two parallel studies relate to the constraints weighing on develoment of the canal. Marianne Löwgren is examining some negative externalities of waterway tourism on other citizens: nutrient load from visitors, exhaust emissions from boat traffic and waste, while Geoffrey Gooch is studying the barriers of all kinds which can prevent or slow down the contribution of the local communities to promotion of the Göta canal.

Those who sale on the canal or visit it by land also have a potential willingness to pay - and actually pay a price in various ways. The estimation of this value is based on a series of interviews with visitors encountered along the canal.
