Norway has two navigable waterway systems, both developed in the 19th century and intensively used for log transport until the mid-20th century, but now maintained exclusively for tourism and recreation. The more important is the Telemark Waterway, which extends for 107km inland from the Skagerrak port of Skien to the village of Dalen (by which name the waterway is also frequently known). The other system is the Halden Waterway, which serves a remote area of lakes and forest close to the Swedish border. However, this is an isolated navigation, with no connection to the Skagerrak east of Oslo.
