Week 1 : Limerick - Robertstown

[ Boating is compatible with environmental conservation ]
Environmentally sound management of our rivers does not exclude large-scale civil engineering works in the form of weirs and locks, or indeed hydropower schemes. The Shannon-Erne waterway, completed in 1994, has completely transformed a remote and economically depressed rural area in Ireland, by attracting hire boaters from throughout Europe. The new weir and Sarsfield lock on the river Shannon in Limerick provide a wide range of environmental benefits along with improved navigability. The success of the fish pass recently built at Iffezheim lock on the Rhine, with a second now under construction at Gambsheim, shows that migrating fish can coexist with modern inland navigation.
